What Causes Brown Spots in St. Louis Lawns in Summer

Brown spots in a summer lawn almost always get blamed on the wrong thing. A homeowner sees dead patches in July, assumes it's the heat, waters more, and watches the spots spread. Or they assume it's a fungal disease, stop watering, and the lawn dries out further. Both responses make sense on the surface. Both make things worse when the actual cause is something else entirely.

Brown spots in St. Louis lawns in summer come from several distinct causes and each one looks slightly different, responds differently to water, and requires a different response. Treating the wrong problem doesn't just waste money. It often accelerates the damage.


This guide covers the six most common causes of brown spots in St. Louis lawns during summer, how to tell them apart, and what to do about each one.


Brown Patch Fungal Disease

Brown patch is, according to the University of Missouri Extension, the most important disease limiting tall fescue use in Missouri — and tall fescue is the dominant grass in St. Louis residential lawns. It's the first thing a lawn care professional checks when brown spots appear in summer.

Brown patch follows what MU Extension calls the "6-8 flip-flop" rule: the disease becomes active when nighttime lows are near 68°F and daytime highs are near or above 86°F. Those conditions describe most of a St. Louis summer. Add high humidity and extended leaf wetness — from evening irrigation, overnight dew, or rain — and the fungus Rhizoctonia solani can establish and spread quickly.

What it looks like: Roughly circular or irregularly shaped patches ranging from 6 inches to several feet in diameter, brown or straw-colored. Look closely at individual grass blades along the outer margin of the patch — you'll see a characteristic lesion: a tan or straw-colored center with a distinct dark brown border. In early morning when turf is wet, faint tufts of grayish fungal mycelium may be visible along the patch edges.

What it doesn't do: Brown patch does not sever the root system. Grass affected by brown patch holds firm when you pull it. If the turf lifts easily from the soil, the cause is grubs, not disease.

What makes it worse: Evening irrigation is the single biggest contributor to brown patch in St. Louis neighborhoods. Grass that stays wet through warm humid nights is in near-ideal conditions for the fungus to spread. Overfertilization with nitrogen during summer heat stress periods also significantly increases disease severity.

What to do: Shift irrigation to early morning so the turf dries during the day. Raise mowing height to 3.5 to 4 inches. Avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizer applications during peak summer heat. In established lawns, crowns and roots typically survive even when leaf tissue dies — most brown patch damage recovers as conditions cool in fall.


Grub Worm Root Damage

White grubs — the larvae of Japanese beetles, masked chafers, and June bugs — feed on grass roots below the soil surface from late July through fall. By the time brown patches appear above ground, significant root damage has already occurred.

What it looks like: Irregular brown patches that don't improve with watering. The turf looks drought-stressed but doesn't respond to moisture because the root system that would absorb the water has been compromised or severed.

The definitive test: Grab a handful of affected grass and pull firmly. Grub-damaged turf lifts away from the soil with almost no resistance — like a loose carpet with roots cut through. Healthy grass resists. Grass affected by heat stress, drought, or disease holds firm even when the blades are discolored.

Secondary signs: Raccoons, skunks, and birds actively dig for grubs at night. Overnight digging along the edges of brown patches — especially in West County, Chesterfield, and St. Peters neighborhoods — strongly suggests a grub population worth investigating.

What to do: Confirm the population with a count test. Dig out a 12-inch by 12-inch section of turf to a depth of 3 inches near the damaged area and count the grubs. A population above 8 to 10 per square foot warrants curative treatment. Curative insecticides require heavy irrigation immediately after application to move the active ingredient down to where the grubs are feeding.


Heat and Drought Stress

Not every brown lawn in August has a pest or disease problem. Cool-season grasses like tall fescue can go dormant under sustained heat and drought stress — it's a survival mechanism, not death. The grass is conserving energy until conditions improve.

What it looks like: A diffuse, straw-colored fade across large open areas of the lawn rather than defined circular patches. Heat and drought stress is typically uniform across sun-exposed areas and much less severe in shaded sections of the same yard. Individual grass blades die back from the tip downward. Footprints remain visible longer than usual.

The screwdriver test: Push a flat-head screwdriver 6 inches into the soil. If it slides in easily, there's adequate soil moisture. If it's difficult to push in and comes out dry, the soil is genuinely dry and the lawn needs deep watering. Heat stress with adequate soil moisture is a different problem than heat stress compounded by drought.

What to do: Water deeply — targeting 1 to 1.5 inches per week including rainfall — in early morning sessions rather than shallow daily watering. Raise mowing height to 3.5 to 4 inches to shade the soil surface and reduce moisture loss. Most dormant fescue recovers well once temperatures moderate in September.


Dog Urine Burns

Dog urine contains high concentrations of nitrogen and salts. In small amounts, nitrogen acts as a fertilizer. In concentrated amounts — from a dog repeatedly urinating in the same spot — it chemically burns the grass, killing it to the roots in the immediate contact zone.

What it looks like: Small, roughly circular brown spots with a characteristic bright green ring around the outside. The green ring is the grass that received a small amount of nitrogen and got fertilized rather than burned. This center-dead, green-ring pattern is distinctive — no fungal disease or pest produces this signature. The spots match your dog's bathroom habits and location patterns exactly.

What it doesn't look like: Dog urine spots don't spread the way fungal disease does. They stay where the urination occurred. If you have a dog and can match each brown spot to a location your dog regularly uses, the diagnosis is almost always correct.

What to do: Flush the area with water immediately after urination whenever possible — diluting the nitrogen concentration before it burns. For existing spots, soak the area thoroughly and overseed into the dead zones in September when fescue germinates best. Designating a mulched or gravel area for the dog to use consistently is the most reliable long-term prevention strategy.


Fertilizer Burn

Over-application of fertilizer — or spilling granular product in concentrated amounts — creates brown spots through the same mechanism as dog urine: excess nitrogen and salt concentration that dehydrates and chemically burns the grass.

What it looks like: Sharply defined brown streaks or patches that often follow the path of a spreader, or irregular burned areas near a spill point. Fertilizer burn spots appear within 24 to 72 hours after application and have crisp, unnatural-looking edges. The pattern frequently mirrors the application route — stripes or bands rather than organic shapes.

What to do: If you catch it within a few hours, flood the area with water to dilute the nitrogen before it causes maximum damage. For established burn spots, water consistently and allow recovery time. Severe cases may require overseeding in fall. Calibrating your spreader correctly and avoiding application on hot days significantly reduces the risk.


Localized Dry Spots

Even in a lawn that is watered consistently, individual patches can dry out faster than surrounding areas due to soil variability, buried objects, shallow hardpan, tree root competition, or differences in soil composition.

What it looks like: Isolated brown spots in an otherwise green and healthy lawn, appearing even when irrigation is adequate. Localized dry spots often occur in the same locations year after year. The screwdriver test will show dry, compacted soil directly beneath the affected area while surrounding soil is adequately moist.

These spots are common in older St. Louis neighborhoods where soil profiles are inconsistent, in yards with buried construction debris, and in areas where aggressive tree roots — from the large shade trees common in Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and Ladue — are competing for soil moisture near the surface.

What to do: Core aeration in fall improves water infiltration in problem areas. Supplemental hand watering in localized dry spots — in addition to your regular irrigation schedule — often keeps these areas from browning out entirely in peak summer heat.
